REGISTRATION OF AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT
For more detailed information on Australian citizenship please consult click here.
A child born overseas can be registered as an Australian citizen by descent if at least one of the natural parents was an Australian citizen at the time of the child\'s birth.
A parent can apply for registration of Australian citizenship by descent on behalf of the child before the child reaches 18 years of age. Applicants over 18 may apply in their own right.
From 1 July 2009, all citizenship by descent applications for Metropolitan France (NOT the French DOMs or TOMs), Belgium, Luxembourg, the Principalities of Monaco and Andorra will be processed at the Australian High Commission in London.
IMPORTANT: Australian citizenship details are registered using the English alphabet.
If the application is approved, a certificate which is evidence of your child\'s Australian citizenship will be issued to you.
You will need to present your child\'s original Australian citizenship certificate to the Consular Section should you wish to make a passport application for your child.
Once a child has been registered as an Australian citizen, the child must not enter Australia on any travel document other than his/her own Australian passport.
